Scaling & Root Planing
In the early stages of gum disease, we may be able to renew oral health with more frequent professional teeth cleanings. Typically, we recommend three to four times each year rather than the traditionally recommended six-month checkups. Additionally, these cleanings are specifically focused on promoting gum health. If gum disease progresses, we may need to provide more advanced treatments known as scaling and root planing. Scaling is the systematic removal of plaque and tartar at the gum line, and root planing is the smoothing of tooth roots to prevent the future buildup of plaque and tartar.
Antibiotic Therapy
In addition to scaling and root planing, we may also provide oral or topical antibiotic therapy to reduce the number of oral bacteria. These bacteria excrete plaque that can lead to gum disease, so by limiting the presence of bacteria in the mouth, we are also able to better control and reduce the recurrence of gum disease. Topical antibiotics are often applied directly following scaling and root planing to decrease the amount of time it takes for the gum tissue to fully heal.
